Florida Youth Beating Suspect Denied Bail

Recently two teens surrendered to authorities in the case of the fatal beatings of a homeless man, and a second beating that was videotaped by a surveillance camera.

The teens are Brian Hooks, 18, and Thomas S. Daugherty, 17.

Circuit Judge Steven P. [DeLuca]Create? ordered a psychological examination for Daugherty, one of the two teens. They face murder charges in the death fo Norris Gaynor, 45, and aggravated battery charges in the videotaped beating of Jacques Pierre, 58. Prosecutors are still not decided whether they will charge Daugherty as a juvenile or an adult.

The attack on Pierre occurred on the Fort Lauderdale campus of Florida Atlantic University. The videotape appears to show the youths chasing the homeless man with baseball bats after they found him sleeping on a bench. Gaynor died of severe head injuries in a beating that occurred a few blocks away from the attack on Pierre.
